ARCOS employs a holistic approach to language and learning. Those with Special Educational Needs including Autistic Spectrum disorders (ASD), benefit from individual and small group teaching from Special Educational Needs teacher Dwynwen Matthews.
Mrs Matthews collaborates closely with ARCOS therapists so that children benefit from an appropriate combination of teaching and speech and language therapy or occupational therapy, as appropriate. ARCOS liaises with schools to complement and reinforce teaching and learning. Special teaching sessions are provided throughout the year and parents are welcomed.

Eleven year old Simon* (pictured above) has learning and communication difficulties associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Weekly sessions at ARCOS have provided an opportunity for him to benefit from visual support for spoken language. ARCOS volunteers and staff have worked with his mother to produce learning materials that include photographs, symbols and pictures for everyday use. As his understanding of language increases, Simon's frustration has reduced and he is increasingly able to cope with a variety of situations and people. After working in this way for nearly a year, he is looking forward to joining a small class in a special secondary school. ARCOS will continue to work with Simon and teachers at his new school.
